So today I worked the evening. The benefit of this was that I got to see the shuttle, Atlantis, take off for the last time ever. Now, there's no more space shuttles. This is terribly saddening to me.
I understand that shuttles cost a ton of money and that they didn't do what they were supposed to do, BUT that's because of other circumstantial things that happened. Also, 2 of the flights ended horrifically, but I can guarantee that the astronauts knew the risks. Many people will say that it's a good thing that the program has ended, but not me. Shuttles may have not commercialized space travel, but they definitely brought around amazing scientific discoveries!!
I guess I'm kind of a space nerd. If I had good vision and better brains, maybe I'd have studied hard and worked for NASA. I love NASA. I think it would be totally awesome to hit on a dude and when he asked me what I did, I could say "I work for NASA." (The librarian thing works for me, but I think NASA would be totally rockin).
Years ago, when my Uncle Bill moved to Florida, we actually got to see a shuttle take off. We were miles away, unlike what you get to see when you watch it on tv, but it was just soooooo cool! I wish I could remember it more vividly...I just remember my mom teasing my grammy for sitting under a black umbrella in the hot sun. Go fig.
Maybe I should just meet someone from NASA who could take me on a special tour of the Florida Space Center. I want restricted access. I'd probably get all geeked out seeing their control room!!
I can't see kids wanting to be astronauts without space shuttles. That was like the ulitmate symbol of space travel...I guess time will tell.
Also, when I die and get cremated, if it's possible, shoot my ashes up into space!! That would be my ultimate dream come true! I'd finally get to see space! (Yes I am weird and crazy. I already know. No need to comment on it.)
For today's song challenge: Day 18 – A song that you wish you heard on the radio. Pretty much anything considered true "oldies" is what I would like to hear. They used to have stations that played music from the 50s and 60s. Now oldies seem to be 70s/80s/90s. It's sad. I miss the standards. I miss the doo-wop and Motown on the radio. If I had to pick one artist in particular...I wish I heard Sam Cooke on the radio. Songs like, Bring it on Home to Me, are just so timeless. They are powerful tunes that invoke feeling. They're good melodies with good lyrics. I'm a standards kind of girl!
