Week recap

So after being off of work for a week, this past week has been an adventure in playing catch up.  It had a series of ups and downs.  Overall though, I'm pretty proud to say that my outreach at a local camp was super successful this past week!  We normally collect 5-15 completed logs.  This week we had 42!  I think it's because I did some awesome storytelling on Monday, but you know, I like to toot my own horn :)

I went to the dentist on Wednesday and got the last of my much needed fillings done, so I officially have a healthy mouth...well at least for the month of July.  I go back for my 6-month cleaning in August!  Hopefully, it will be better this time around.

Yesterday, my co-worker and I went down to Louisville for Fandom Fest.  It was a random assortment of comic book/gaming/horror film/sci-fi geeks.  We were able to sit in on a variety of "celebrity" panels and we had more fun listening to those than anything else.  Some highlights:

  • Bruce Campbell of "Evil Dead" was quite full of himself.  He was on an "Evil Dead" panel, but managed to dominate the entire thing because he was the official "Guest of Honor" for the fest.  He picked on some of the people dressed up like his character in evil dead and prank called some lady's husband.  I think he's probably a bit of a cocky jerk, but he was still entertaining and had us laughing quite a bit!
  • Peter Davison (5th Dr. Who), Colin Ferguson (Eureka), and Gareth David Lloyd (Torchwood) made up one of the most fascinating panels I've ever listened to.  They were there to talk about science fiction TV series, but they had a chemistry that was stunning!  It may have been the Jell-o shots (I still have no idea why they had these for themselves and the audience, but it made the panel quite lively).  One of the funniest moments was when Peter said he wrote/sang the theme song of a British show called "Button Moon" and Gareth got a shocked look on his face and started going on and on about how much he loved the show as a kid...he did the whole "you're kidding? you didn't really write that did you?" thing which was adorable.  It was like seeing a kid meet one of their heroes!
  • Corey Feldman, John Rhys-Davies, and Sean Astin led a Goonies/Lord of the Rings panel.  Corey and Sean spent a lot of time realizing that they tried out for the same roles, most of which neither got.  Corey was on the immature side of things.  He kept trying to be funny, but it felt forced.  Sean acted a bit "better" than everyone else, but he tried to pass it off as he just works hard at his craft to be the best actor he can be.  From what he said I wonder if that is more for Sean or his parents...  John was brilliant.  He talked about LOTR, Indiana Jones, Sliders, etc.  He is quite witty too.  Just watch out for his zings...they're cunning and unexpected!
  • Nicholas Brendon and James Marsters led a Buffy panel.  These two guys are just fun to listen to.  Nicholas is starting to look old.  In a way, it was kind of refreshing to see him aging gracefully!  James on the other hand...you can totally tell the dude dyes his hair!  Nicholas also did the "Snoopy" dance and James sang a song for us...so it was definitely a unique experience!
Then today I watched "This Means War" and "A Little Bit of Heaven".  War was lame.  I found it 100% predictable and shallow.  It was also way longer than it needed to be.  I love Reese, but this was definitely a miss for her.  She's a better actress than that!  As for Heaven, Kate Hudson surprised me completely.  She gave one of the better performances I've seen of her.  It was completely heartbreaking though :(  I cried a good hour of the movie (if you didn't know, it's basically about a woman dying of cancer).  It was just really well done, but soooooooo sad!  It gets you thinking about how fragile life can be though...which isn't always a bad thing.

Now it's time to frost some cupcakes for a work potluck tomorrow.  I hope they come out good!
