This past weekend I went home to Michigan for Owen's First Communion.
Driving up on Thursday was a bust. It took 5.5 hours due to the start of orange barrel season. Hopefully we'll improve upon that soon and get back to the 4.5 hours trek.
On Friday, I got to go shopping for party supplies with Kevin. We tried our best with the list Angela provided, but all in all she still wasn't satisfied with our purchases even though we got everything she had listed! Even so, it was nice spending time with my bro. Kev is a pretty cool guy.
Then later that evening we prepared for the party with all of the ins and outs of setting up for the party. Per usual I took care of the prep cook duties, while trying to keep the party planners in check. Something about throwing a party makes people in my family a bit crazy... The Red Wings also lost their game that night which was a bit of a bummer, although not all that surprising.
On Saturday we had the First Communion. We started by getting to church early in order to get a pew where we could all sit together. We ended up in the back, but it all worked out. The surprise of the day was that Nick showed up. We saw him sitting on the opposite side of the church, so I went and grabbed him to come and sit with us. So, he came over and sat with us through the Mass. Afterwards I rode with him back to my parents' house in order to go and pick up my car before the party. He told me a few stories about his work and Jack, which was nice.
All in all, I have to say that I'm proud of Nick for showing up. I know on some levels it had to be hard for him to come. However, he came and that's what matters. Owen was extremely excited to have is godfather there and whether or not they'll admit it, I think it meant something to the rest of the family as well. Things aren't magically fixed overnight or anything, but it's definitely a step in the right direction. Hopefully everyone can leave the past in the past and we can just move forward.
Then we had the party and things worked out really well. We had a decent amount of people show up and the food turned out pretty good too.
Owen and his godparents (Nick and Me):
On Sunday, Melissa and I went to church and then Olga's for lunch. It was super yummy but we ate too much! Then we went and saw the movie "The Lucky One". The movie plot was weak, but that's not that surprising. It was just nice seeing a sexy Zac Efron on the screen! The major makeout scene was worth the price of admission.
Then Melissa took a nap and I played Bubble Frog for a bit. Then we went out to dinner and Phil came along. We ordered a ton of sushi and some Chinese food and ate like little piggies again! Totally worth it though because it was yummy! Then we watched "The Descendants" before calling it a night.
On Monday Owen didn't have school because of making his 1st Communion so we hung out all day. We read some books and played some video games. Then we read some books and sang some songs to Mikayla which she enjoyed! All in all it was fun. Then I drove back home to KY.
Now, I'm just exhausted. This has been quite a week at work so far and I've still got 3 days to go...
