Fun time in February

So on Friday, I took the day off.  Melissa and I went down to Toledo.  We stopped at the Hollywood Casino where Melissa had a great streak of luck!  Then we checked into a hotel in Maumee.

We ended up going off the beaten path and trying a local sushi place.  The food was good, but the service was terrible!  Melissa also had her first sake and watching her facial expressions were priceless...if you've never had it, it's basically a wine made from fermented rice and it feels like 1000% proof when you drink it :)

Then that night we went to see Matchbox 20 in concert.  I've always loved the band, so I was pretty stoked to see them live!  Melissa was a bit worried that they'd only sing their new stuff, but they sang a bunch of their old stuff as well and chose only a few new tunes to add to the mix.  The crowd was full of energy and everybody was dancing and singing!  It was a blast!  I felt like a teenager again!  Plus, it's nice to know that the band doesn't act like jerks.  They seemed really cool and down to earth and sang their old stuff even though they're probably sick of it by now.  I'm still mad at the Counting Crows who refused to sing "Mr. Jones and Me" when I saw them in concert...the lead singer felt like he was above it or something which is annoying.  Sing your hits people.  That's why people come to see you.  By all means sing the stuff you want to sing too, but keep it real.  Your hits sell your records.

Anyways, then on Saturday morning we woke up, enjoyed a pathetic continental breakfast, and drove to Cleveland.  We started out at the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame's Library and Archives!  Melissa RSVP'd us for a special lecture about Jimmy Baine's photography (a special black history event for the Archives focusing on black music in the 50s and 60s in Cleveland through the analyzing of his photographs).  It was interesting, but some of the speakers were getting a bit long winded.  While there though, I signed up for a library card!  Apparently they're open to anyone.  Even if I never use it, I feel good about helping their stats!  Plus, you never know when you're going to need additional reference resources for music!

Then we went over to the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame.  It's a pretty big building.  It has roughly 7 floors with exhibits.  There are some really cool artifacts in there and music lovers from all over could appreciate the diversity of the collection.  There are of course special exhibits of Elvis, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, and more.  There was almost too much stuff to look at though...it almost felt overwhelming at times because there was just so much.  I wish we were allowed to take pictures in the place because it seriously has some awesome stuff, but alas no photography allowed inside.  Otherwise you would've seen pics of Elvis' jumpsuit, hand written lyrics by awesome peeps like Bob Seger, Katy Perry's dress, John Lennon's piano, Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" suit, and more.  They do a great job of covering rock music throughout the decades.

One of the coolest videos was a mashup of footage from the Dick Clark American Band Stand shows...they had a bunch of highlights of different people singing and the silly questions/comments Dick Clark would make to them.  Plus who doesn't love Dick Clark?  He was awesome for music!

Then we drove around Cleveland for a bit and saw their new casino and such, but we didn't stop in because parking was $15 and that seems like a lot.

Anyways, since there weren't a lot of places we could take pictures, this is all I've got:

The entrance to the Library and Archives

Me outside the library
